National Preparedness month

The availability of 24-hour news broadcast provides us with a first-hand look at the devastation of natural disasters, the aftermath of terrorist attacks, and the lives that are forever changed by circumstances beyond anyone’s control. So it’s really no secret that bad things can, and will, eventually happen. The question is… are you and your family prepared? When preparing for a possible emergency, it is best to think first about survival: Fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. Recommended items to include in a basic Emergency Supply Kit should include: Water one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation * Food for at least a three day supply of non-perishable food * Clean Air Dust Masks to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place * Warmth Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person, consider additional bedding for cold weather months. Complete change of clothes including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes consider additional clothing for cold months. Other items to be considered are: Battery-powered or hand crank radio with a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both * Flashlight and extra batteries * First Aid Kit * Whistle to  signal for help* Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation * Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities * Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) * Local maps * Additional items to consider adding to kit include: Prescription medications and glasses * Infant formula and diapers * Pet food and extra water for your pet * Documents including copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records (place in waterproof container) * Cash and travelers checks, change * Emergency reference material including first aid book * Chlorine bleach and medicine dropper for use as a disinfectant when diluted 9 parts water to 1 part bleach. In an emergency situation when no clean water is available by other means, bleach can be used to treat water by using 16 drops of regular liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners * Fire extinguisher * Matches * Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items * Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels * Paper and pencil * Books, games, puzzles or other activities are also a good idea for children.
