(SPENCER, OK) – October 5th, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. the city will officially open the McCoy Walking Trail. The walking trail is located just south of Spencer City Hall and will provide a safe and shaded place for residents of the Farris First and Farris Highlands Subdivisions, the Senior Citizens Center, and all City Departments to walk for exercise or leisure. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony and take a lap after remarks are given by special guests and contributors to the completion of the Trail. To greet her constituents, newly elected County Commissioner Willa Johnson, will give remarks as well as Vice Mayor Jefferson and representatives from Integris Health. In February 2006, Integris presented the Spencer Parks Board with a check for over $11,000 to support the purchase of materials for the Trail. Then County Commissioner, Jim Roth, supported the development of McCoy Park with use of county engineering staff, labor, and equipment to start the project. The History - The land was deeded by Kerr McGee to the City of Spencer in the 80’s with the contingency that the land be used for a city park. The Parks Board appointed in 2001 decided to build a walking trail to feed into the Farris Subdvisions. While searching for a name for the Park the City Council wanted a name with historical value and settled on McCoy after Ed McCoy, whose family was one of the earliest settlers that still had descendants living in the City at that time. The Spencer Kids of Interest came along in 2006 with ideas for development and an interest in making their community better. They assisted with fundraising and rolled up their sleeves to help pick what trees would add to the scenic value of the Trail. The public is invited to attend the dedication and don’t forget to take a lap around the trail before you go. For more information on the walking trail please contact the City of Spencer (771-3226) or spencercitymanager@sbcglobal.net.

The Spencer Cougars youth football team was started when a group of former Cougars, who played in early 80 's, decided that the children in the Spencer community deserved the same opportunity that they had as children.
